Show how to access Academic Search Premier. Pass out In-Class Exercise. Roam around the classroom and answer questions.

Description: Contains 6 worksheets (on 6 pages) to be used by groups or individuals. Page 1 is intended for students who come to the session with a research topic in-hand. Pages 2-6 provide the student with a research topic to work with. The exercise is in 4 parts: students will brainstorm keywords, combine the keywords to make search statements, try their search statements in Academic Search Premier, and choose which search statement is most appropriate for the given research topic.

Requirements:

• Students need an understanding of Boolean Operators and how they work. See Research 101's "Creating a Search Query" for examples (movies and images at the bottom of this page are helpful visual aids).
• If time allows, show students how to Create Folders and e-mail results.

Communication and Mass Media Complete
”Communication & Mass Media Complete is a merger of two popular databases: CommSearch, formerly produced by the National Communication Association (NCA), and Mass Media Articles Index, formerly produced by Penn State University. CommSearch contains references to 26 journals in communication studies, with some coverage extending as far back as the early 20th century. Mass Media Articles Index provides citation coverage of over 40,000 articles related to mass media and published in over 60 research journals, as well as major journalism reviews, recent encyclopedias, and handbooks. Search words = reliability and parallel
Within the ACM, there are different “collections” and availability of material. You can register for features like “alert/toc”.  There is the “guide” and the “dl”.
· The Guide is a collection of bibliographic citations and abstracts of works published by ACM and other publishers.
· The Digital Library is the full-text repository of papers published by ACM and by other publishers that have co-publishing or co-marketing agreements with ACM.
AUC Libraries has access to the full-text of the journals, magazines and transactions, but NOT the proceedings and SIG Newsletter. Access is restricted to 3 concurrent users per session.

Computer Source has full-text for half the 700 publications.  Basic search features.  Publications, Nanosecond & view ToC.

Emerald uncheck the default box & do search “full-text” & don’t use a check mark under the find box.  ToC and search update available.

The library does not have the articles I need!

Dissertation Abstracts Online *On-Campus Use Only 
Selectively indexes dissertations and theses from U.S., Canada, Britian, and Europe. Contains more than 1.6 million records. Researchers can also preview many recent documents electronically through ProQuest Dissertations and Theses, which lets users see the first 24 pages of thousands of documents online. Updated monthly.
