PART 2: Using Academic Search Premier
INTRODUCTION / THE HOOK:
Ask: Who has had to find an article? When? Why? What did you do?
Ask: Does anyone know where to find an article?
Show how to access Academic Search Premier. Pass out In-Class Exercise. Roam around the classroom and answer questions.
IN-CLASS EXERCISE 2: Using Academic Search Premier
Description: Contains 6 worksheets (on 6 pages) to be used by groups or individuals. Page 1 is intended for students who come to the session with a research topic in-hand. Pages 2-6 provide the student with a research topic to work with. The exercise is in 4 parts: students will brainstorm keywords, combine the keywords to make search statements, try their search statements in Academic Search Premier, and choose which search statement is most appropriate for the given research topic.
Requirements:
- Students need an understanding of Boolean Operators and how they work. See Research 101's "Creating a Search Query" for examples (movies and images at the bottom of this page are helpful visual aids).
- If time allows, show students how to Create Folders and e-mail results.
DISCUSSION:
Each student shares results with the class.
