Law Research Skill-Building Workshop: Catalog and ASP

CLASS OBJECTIVE:

  • To introduce the AUC Library Catalog
  • To introduce searching Academic Search Premier

PART 1: The AUC Library Catalog

INTRODUCTION / THE HOOK: Show how to access the AUC library catalog. Pass out In-Class Exercise.

IN-CLASS EXERCISE 1: Using The AUC Library Catalog

Download Searching_AUC_Catalog_Law.doc

Download Searching_AUC_Catalog_Law_Answer_Key.doc

Description: 9 hands-on questions; can be completed in groups or individually.

Requirements: 15-30 minutes for completion, depending on skill-level of class; 15-30 minutes for going over exercise, depending on skill level of class.

Teacher Notes:

DISCUSSION:

Go over the In-Class Exercise, pointing out advanced key concepts:

  • Keywords vs. Subject Headings
  • Searching by SUBJECT when looking for books about someone

PART 2: Using Academic Search Premier

INTRODUCTION / THE HOOK:

Ask: Who has had to find an article? When? Why? What did you do?
Ask: Does anyone know where to find an article?

Show how to access Academic Search Premier. Pass out In-Class Exercise. Roam around the classroom and answer questions.

IN-CLASS EXERCISE 2: Using Academic Search Premier

Download Using_ASP_Law.doc

Description: Contains 6 worksheets (on 6 pages) to be used by groups or individuals. Page 1 is intended for students who come to the session with a research topic in-hand. Pages 2-6 provide the student with a research topic to work with. The exercise is in 4 parts: students will brainstorm keywords, combine the keywords to make search statements, try their search statements in Academic Search Premier, and choose which search statement is most appropriate for the given research topic.

Requirements:

  • Students need an understanding of Boolean Operators and how they work. See Research 101's "Creating a Search Query" for examples (movies and images at the bottom of this page are helpful visual aids).
  • If time allows, show students how to Create Folders and e-mail results.

DISCUSSION:

Each student shares results with the class.

Translating & Interpreting

Mustafa Riad
Alison Armstrong

Part 1 – traditional library resources

How to use the catalog to find background information such as online dictionaries, encyclopedias and other general reference tools:

From the AUC Library’s Website http://library.aucegypt.edu/  go to
Research Guides http://library.aucegypt.edu/guides/index.htm and then to
General Guides http://library.aucegypt.edu/guides/handouts.htm

Once at the General Guides page, I would look at the html format of Reference Tools, http://library.aucegypt.edu/guides/ref_tools.htm . There are links to the AUC catalog for print resources.  Scrolling down the page, importantly are three online resources, notably the Oxford Reference Online and a link to the Reference section of the library’s Electronic Resources page.

http://www.oxfordreference.com/views/GLOBAL.html?authstatuscode=202

http://www1.aucegypt.edu/library/libdata/subject.cfm?classid=7

How to find Mona Baker’s book and David Crystal’s book:

From the AUC Library’s Website http://library.aucegypt.edu/  go to
AUC Library Catalog http://library.aucegypt.edu/catalog/index.htm and
search by author, last/family name firstname

Note her book is “on search” check the LCSH of Translating and Interpreting. Crystal has numerous titles and all LCSH are worth noting …

Part 2 – On the Internet

A search in Google or Scholar.Google with the terms of resources for translators produces references to the scholarship of translating or information about the profession of translating rather than tools like polyglots.

For Example:

(fyi http://webct.aucegypt.edu:8900/SCRIPT/LALT10116/scripts/serve_home for search engine features)

http://www.iti.org.uk/indexMain.html - UK institute
http://www.ifi.unizh.ch/cl/yuste/postworkshop/repository/dsaintrobert.pdf UN paper
http://www.rosettaproject.org/live The Rosetta Project

For translating tools, check any search engine’s “advanced features/helplinks”

http://world.altavista.com/ = Babel Fish Translation
http://www.google.com/language_tools?hl=en = Google Language Tools
http://search.yahoo.com/search/options?fr=fp-top&p= Yahoo Advanced

And other tools from the web:

http://www.martindalecenter.com/Language.html Martindale’s

Search words = reliability and parallel
Within the ACM, there are different “collections” and availability of material. You can register for features like “alert/toc”.  There is the “guide” and the “dl”.
· The Guide is a collection of bibliographic citations and abstracts of works published by ACM and other publishers.
· The Digital Library is the full-text repository of papers published by ACM and by other publishers that have co-publishing or co-marketing agreements with ACM.
AUC Libraries has access to the full-text of the journals, magazines and transactions, but NOT the proceedings and SIG Newsletter. Access is restricted to 3 concurrent users per session.

Computer Source has full-text for half the 700 publications.  Basic search features.  Publications, Nanosecond & view ToC.

Emerald uncheck the default box & do search “full-text” & don’t use a check mark under the find box.  ToC and search update available.

Current applications and business trends with more general information re: computer development use ABI Inform.
