IEEE now available off-campus

Off-Campus (Remote) Access Policy

The Library's license agreements with database providers enable us to offer remote access via the proxy server to the following categories of users:

1) AUC Current* Undergraduate and Graduate Students
2) AUC Current* Faculty
3) AUC Full-time Staff
4) CACE Full-time Faculty

*"Current" means "having a CURRENTLY VALID AUC / LIBRARY ID CARD." This will be required every time the user wishes to access the proxy server.

The Library can NOT provide remote access to the following categories, but on-campus access is still available:

1) AUC Part-time Staff
2) CACE Part-time Faculty
3) CACE Students
4) Visitors
5) Alumni
6) Faculty Spouses

Proxy Server Update

All databases have been migrated over to the proxy server, except for the following:
1) America: History & Life
2) Britannica Online
3) IEEE Computer Society Digital Library
3) Middle Eastern & Central Asian Studies (MECAS)
4) UN Treaty Collection

And, the database links in E-Journals A-Z are NOT yet set up with the proxy server! Always ask the patron from where they are accessing the databases --this might explain a problem accessing the proxy server from home.

The following databases are On-Campus Use Only (due to license restrictions):
1) CIAO
2) Islamic Finance Information Service (IFIS)
3) ProQuest Dissertations & Theses (Dissertation Abstracts Online)
4) Safari Tech Books Online
5) Value Line Investment Survey Reports

Directive Regarding Remote (Off-Campus) Access Via Proxy Server

Now that we have implemented the proxy server (almost all of the databases have been migrated over), the library has full control over who can have remote access to the databases.

If a patron contacts you saying he/she cannot access the databases with their name and ID barcode, please ask what their AUC status is. The list below will confirm whether they are authorized to access the databases off-campus.

Share this information with the patron, however you are not obliged to explain or defend the policy. If the patron has questions or complaints, refer the patron first to Lesley Tweddle (ext. 6905). If she is not available, then the patron can contact Huguette Yaghmour (ext. 6349).

Note: This is just a memo to give you the information you need to answer questions about off-campus access. We are in the process of creating an official policy document and will notify you when it is available.

2) CACE Part-time Faculty (CACE Full-time Faculty are included in AUC Faculty category)

3) CACE Students (are not considered AUC students, do not pay the same fees/tuition)

*It is important to note that we are not cutting off their access to the databases. They still have access on-campus!

Proxy Server Update

We have recieved many calls from users ON CAMPUS who are being prompted for username and barcode ID when accessing the migrated databases. Huguette knows about this problem and it should be resolved by the end of today.

Tell users they can still access the databases but need to enter their name and barcode ID until this is resolved. If they still can't access the database/s, please refer them to Huguette (6349).  (note: giving users a short explanation of the proxy server is helpful --see the explanation page I created)

I migrated more databases! The list is too long to provide here. When you go to Electronic Resources, each migrated databases will have *proxy server access next to the title.

There is now an announcement about the proxy server on the Electronic Resources page --can't miss it!

Note: E-Journals A-Z is still NOT set up with the proxy server. If a user calls saying he/she can not access Academic Search Premier, PAIS International, or WilsonWeb from home, ask where the user is clicking (from database list or from E-Journals A-Z?).

As I migrate more databases to the proxy server, I will keep you updated. I will also put *proxy server access next to each migrated database.

So far, 3 databases have been migrated to the Proxy Server: Academic Search Premier, PAIS International, and Library Lit & Information Science (WilsonWeb).

The database links in E-Journals A-Z are NOT YET set up with the Proxy Server.

We are still in the testing stage before announcing the migration to the public.
